You’re about to become a home care franchise owner. At least, that’s what you hope. You’ve been diligent in your research, found a quality company, and contacted numerous franchisees to sit down and speak to them about their experiences. You believe, based on what they told you, what you’ve researched, and what you know about business that this is a good company.

It’s a wonderful feeling to be excited about the prospect of becoming your own boss. You will soon be a business owner. No matter your previous experience in business, it’s important to understand the difference between being a manager and a leader.

Leaders inspire.

A manager essentially tells people what to do, supervises them, checks in on their progress, corrects, redirects, schools, and so forth. The focus of a manager is to keep business operations running according to a plan.

With a manager, there is generally limited autonomy among employees. When you have home care aides working for your agency, you won’t be there to support them or even observe what they’re doing with clients. You will — to a significant degree — need to trust them.

However, if you operate as a manager, you will only have employees. You will have people who will burn out, loose passion for the job, and get frustrated with the challenges that will come with the work rigors.

If you don’t know very much about strong leadership skills, now is the time to learn. There are mentors, coaches, seminars, and plenty of books and resources available that can give you an idea about the difference between managers and leaders.

Leaders make a difference.

As a home care franchise owner (soon to be), you are focused on making a difference in the lives of people who need support. You want to be a light in a darkening world, especially for those who are struggling with daily tasks of everyday life.

Your focus first, though, needs to be with your staff. Whether it’s an assistant, administrator, or your home care aides, you want to make sure they are inspired, motivated, and encouraged throughout their journey in this rewarding profession.

Depending on your particular clientele, you may have limited financial resources to pay people what you really want to, but inspiration and motivation is driven by more than just money.
