Questions. They are an important component of learning information. Think about it in terms of a student who is taking classes. The students sits there and listens to lectures, reads the books, and does the homework assignments, but doesn’t ask any specific questions, will he or she truly be learning as much as possible? Of course, that all depends on the individual, but for the most part, they are likely missing out on a breadth of information. If you are looking to own a home care franchise, questions are going to be important in helping you through this decision-making process.
Let’s consider a few questions you might want to ask if you are contemplating purchasing a home care franchise.
Question #1: Can you contact other franchise owners?
Would you be able to speak to other owners of franchises with this particular company with whom you are considering becoming an owner yourself? By speaking to those owners directly, you can get some valuable insight and other specific questions answered you might not feel comfortable asking somebody from the company itself.
Question #2: What happens with franchises that aren’t successful?
Would the company provide you information on these particular franchises that may have closed up? Not all of them will, and that doesn’t mean they’re hiding something, but there may be confidentiality agreements that they and the former franchisee had in place that need to be honored.
Question #3: Do you support your franchisees beyond basic training?
When you are establishing a new business, especially a franchise, you may have some questions that arise after you open your doors for business. Will the company be supportive of your questions and concerns and also provide the support you need to ensure you have the best chance at success?
You don’t want to be thrown to the wolves, or left flailing in the open waters as you struggle to learn to swim with this new business opportunity.
Question #4: How comfortable will it be, or is it, to work with regional managers or oversight?
Even though you will be an independent business owner, since you are part of a franchise company, there will be some oversight to ensure you are adhering to the rules and expectations set forth for the company itself.
You want to have a good, positive relationship with whatever oversight individual or team you have to deal with. Find out who these people are, their business experience, and how long they’ve been working for the company. This could also be something to ask other franchise owners, if you were given the opportunity to speak to them directly. This will give you a good sense of what it will be like working as a franchisee with this particular company.
